MEET KIMBERLY PRATER

OWNER OF ATCHLEY STEEL

Kimberly Prater is the driving force behind Atchley Steel. Kimberly brings nearly four decades of experience and an unwavering commitment to excellence and quality to the heart of the company. Before she and her husband purchased the company in October of 2023, Kimberly worked at Atchley Steel for 38 years gaining valuable experience and industry knowledge. Kim grew up in the steel industry and combined her knowledge with her love for accounting in her career at Atchley Steel. She continues to put in countless hours to further herself and Atchley Steel by doing whatever it takes to get the job done.

Kimberly Prater’s leadership is not only defined by her extensive industry knowledge but also by her dedication to quality and timeliness. As a minority, woman-owned business, Atchley Steel embodies Kimberly’s values, and her leadership continues to inspire change in the industry. HISTORY OF ATCHLEY STEEL

W.J. Atchley and his son, Steve, founded Atchley Steel in 1983 after working part-time at night and on weekends for four years taking sub-out work from local fabricators. Originally, Atchley Steel was headquartered in a small metal building, in a residential neighborhood, behind W.J.’s house.

After expanding and outgrowing that building multiple times, Steve decided to acquire land for a new location and larger building. W.J did not want to hold Steve back from growing the business and decided to dissolve the partnership and allow him to move forward with his expansion. A short time later, Steve obtained the financing required to build a new facility and bought our current 15-acre property in Salem, Alabama. The 60,000 square foot building was designed, fabricated, and erected, and began full production in August of 1992.

Our current fabrication facility has grown to approximately 94,000 square feet with 15 overhead cranes and automated processing equipment and remains on the original property purchased by Steve.

In 1985, Kim Prater joined the team as a drafter and was promoted to CFO in 1992. In 1998, Steve obtained a General Contractor’s license and pursued property development and left the active daily operation, subsequently Kim moved into the role of Vice President and helped the company grow the customer base and reputation we have today.

In 2011, Steve promoted Kim to President of Atchley Steel. Since then, Kim has handled the daily operations and decision making at Atchley Steel and she and her husband, Jason, purchased the company in October 2023.

If not for the original leadership by W.J. and Steve Atchley along with Kim Prater, Atchley Steel would not be the quality provider of egress access solutions it is today.
